By 2019, there will be electric school buses

Daimler, the parent company of luxury car brand BMW, has been going all in on electric vehicle (EV) technology. The latest addition to their growing electric fleet is an electric school bus, dubbed the Saf-T-Liner C2 Electric Bus, or Jouley for short. The bus has a range of 160km (100 miles) and a capacity for up to 81 children, according to a press release from the company. The vehicle will also accommodate additional batteries to extend the bus’s range.

The bus’s website touts that the vehicle is “emissions-free, noise pollution-free, and fossil fuel-free, helping you save operating costs and maybe even the planet.” School buses generally run short routes and have the opportunity to sit for hours each day between deployments, making them ideal candidates for an electric upgrade.

Electric buses are also gaining traction in the realm of public transportation. Recently, twelve mayors in cities around the world pledged to only buy electric buses by the middle of the next decade. While public transportation has already made our skies cleaner, moving to electric vehicles will multiply that effect.
