Quebec: Environmentally Responsible Fly Larvae
Fight against overexploitation of resources and waste to offer a sustainable alternative in the food industry: this is the final goal of the young company Entosystem. Located in Sherbrooke, the company produces each day 100 kg of fly larvae intended for feeding to animals.
Flies as a protein source?
Fly larvae are an alternative to substitute soy flour or fishmeal in the food industry. Indeed, the flies are protein-rich insects and high in saturated fat. Fly-based flour is thus 65% proteins. Other high-quality nutrients, such as calcium and iron, can be found in these larvae. They improve the animals’ health.
From a Linear System to Circular Economy
Fly larvae reach maturity from five to six days after hatching. Another advantage is that these flies are detritivore. Detriti-what? It is quite simple: the larvae feed of organic waste. The founders Jean-François Dépelteau and Cédric Provost began with this finding. In Canada, almost 40% of the food ends up in the trash. This waste represents losses of 30 billion dollars per year. This is the same in the food industry. Entosystem uses this undervalued organic material to feed the larvae.
Collaborate to Achieve the Goals
The manure produced by the larvae is also reused. Indeed, it is sold to farmers as an organic fertilizer. Entosystem is a zero waste certified company. After their culture, Entosystem sells the larvae to Quebecker transformers. For now, the larvae are only used to make pet food. Nevertheless, the founders are focused on their final goal: becoming an alternative to fishmeal. They rely on collaboration to build the foundations of the tomorrow food industry.
