Aging with friends in Denmark
Although there are several ways to cope with old age (through family care, for example, or by being independent in the home), it is the option of placement in a retirement home that is most frequently used.
Nevertheless, this choice may lead to contentious situations and several spillover effects. Indeed, it is not uncommon to find that some older people can suffer terrible abuse, sometimes intentionally.
Violence can take many forms: physical brutality, psychological abuse, or abuse of any kind. Moreover, countless examples have recently highlighted the fact that elder abuse persists in retirement homes.
As for the more determined people who may or may not choose to live alone, most of them usually face isolation and loneliness.
A community and inclusive dimension

This is why many seniors choose not to live in a retirement home. This is the case in Denmark especially !
For some time now, in the country that is a champion of “good living”, the development of a housing programme for senior shared accommodation has been emerging, that is to say the establishment of residences where elderly people, who all know each other, live together.
Within these complexes, an abundance of activities are offered to facilitate exchanges and community life.
This new scheme seems to be bearing fruit and is gradually being exported across all continents, both European and American.
