Ecosia: An Eco-Friendly Rival to Google
Web search usually goes hand in hand with Google. The best-known search engine charmed millions of Internet users who use it daily. However, a new generation of search engines sees the light of day over the last decade. Combining speed and diversity of results, these search engines claim to be eco-friendly. Ecosia is the leader.
The Ecosia adventure begins in 2009 in Wittenberg, Germany. The founder Christian Kroll got together with Yahoo and Bing to create a search engine allowing the user to play a role. Indeed, this idea grew after a student journey: Kroll witnessed the beauty of nature but also its gradual destruction.
“Ecosia allows each of us to play a role in the protection of the environment in the context of an easy and daily gesture: Internet search. And it is free.” Christian Kroll (translated from French)
And thus, it was Ecosia, a will to take action on an individual scale. Every search leads to the planting of a tree.
Ecosia works just like any other search engine: the advertising linked to the searches generate incomes for the company. However, Ecosia donates 80% of these advertising revenues to the organization WWF.
“[WWF] built a considerable network, including the main decision-makers on a local scale. It is essential to establish a long-term preservation program.” Christian Kroll (translated from French)
It is thus the advertising revenue that allows the company to plant trees in association with WWF. The plantation of a tree needs approximately 45 searches. According to an article from Le Figaro, a search on Google consumes as much electricity as a bulb in an hour. Ecosia is fully powered by renewal energies. The planted trees also absorb 1 kg of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere after each research.
The company is completely transparent regarding its incomes. Financial reports are available directly on the homepage. In January 2019, Ecosiagenerated 1,044,924 euros. From this general income, 438,846 euros were used to plant trees. Wages and taxes represent 322,893 euros. 176,235 euros were given to the advertisement for the search engine. Finally, 106,951 euros were saved for future invests. The web search of 8 million users allowed to plant 2,047,139 trees around the world (map).
Protecting the PLANET. While surfing on the Internet is now possible. Other free and eco-friendly browser extensions are also available. Each of us can play a role on a small scale, with an easy web search
