Greener Hotels in Costa Rica
The project of the Arenal Kioro hotel in Costa Rica wants to allow travellers to be closer to its fauna and flora. Discover one of the most beautiful countries in Central America.
A Resplendent Place
Costa Rica’s popularity is undoubtedly due to its flamboyant vegetation and the image of the Pura Vida (pure life) that is lived there. However, the country could have had a different look if the state had not changed its values. In the 1980s, trees were cut down so that coffee and banana cultivation could flourish. As the farms became less profitable, the government decided to reforest the land and chose to transform Costa Rica into an eco-friendly tourist destination. The Costa Rican constitution states that “the right to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment”.
Arenal Kioro takes its name from two emblematic figures of the region. The Arenal comes from the nearby volcano and the Kioro is the name of the yellow-throated toucan with two-coloured beaks (yellow and brown). The current manager is the third generation to run the place. His grandfather decided in 2002 to establish the family business and began construction of the first residences. The location and layout of the structure proved to be ideal and perfect. As his grandfather wished, each room has a view of the breathtaking Arenal volcano. The space is very open so that air and light can circulate at any time.
For a More Sustainable Trip
The hotel has installed solar panels on each building to ensure hot water. One of the latest projects consists of replanting vegetation to obtain a more traditional Costa Rican green space. Without a doubt, this idea will give the possibility to welcome wildlife, especially since two water points are available on the property for the animals to drink.
As a primary mission, the hotel is committed to providing the best experience to its guests while enjoying nature. The hot springs remain the most popular activity, but many other partnerships take place to get to know La Fortuna. Through hiking, canyoning or rafting, visitors will have access to the highest and most beautiful areas in the territory such as the Arenal Volcano National Park, and La Fortuna Waterfall. The suspension bridges of Arenal will allow admiring the Costa Rican fauna and flora from above. Bird-watching and boat trips to visit the Caño Negro are a must for animal lovers.
