Kisses Deep
The Centaur Theatre in Old Montreal is presenting Kisses Deep, a striking new work by celebrated playwright Michel Marc Bouchard, running until December 14. First produced in French at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in 2021, the play now appears in English under the direction of Centaur’s Artistic and Executive Director, Eda Holmes, who also staged the original production. The translation is by Linda Gaboriau, Bouchard’s long-time collaborator.
A stylish, emotionally charged drama, Kisses Deep follows Hugo, a young designer in a small Quebec town whose passion for high fashion is inspired by Yves
Saint Laurent. When his mother Béatrice is arrested for assault, Hugo becomes determined to help her reclaim her dignity. Believing that the right outfit can transform her fate, he undertakes the creation of a tuxedo for her court appearance, confronting the tenderness and turmoil of their relationship along the way.
The cast brings together acclaimed performers from Montreal’s French and English theatre communities, including Lyndz Dantiste, Yves Jacques, Leni Parker, Alice Pascual, and newcomer Kevin Raymond. Their performances support a visually rich production exploring identity, creativity, and redemption.
Holmes and her design team developed the original staging during the pandemic, incorporating projections and flexible elements; although the 2021 English run was cancelled due to Omicron, the production has been revived for Centaur’s stage. Select performances feature French surtitles, along with post-show discussions that offer insight into the creative process.
- Kisses Deep* underscores Centaur Theatre’s commitment to bridging Montreal’s linguistic and cultural communities while showcasing one of Quebec’s most renowned playwrights
