What if we used straws made of wild grass rather than plastic?
Whether made of hay, glass, bamboo, reed, pasta, edible, recyclable, biodegradable… there is no shortage of alternatives when it comes to ecological straws. In recent years, the straw market has completely exploded. Raised to the rank of the symbol of the environmental fight, it quickly reflected a strong desire among citizens to encourage more environmentally friendly initiatives.
Now, it’s up to wild grass. A project that seems to appeal to Vietnamese people, whose country has unfortunately become one of the largest producers of plastic waste.
Straws go green
Tran Minh Tien, a young Vietnamese entrepreneur, is at the origin of the new ecological straws, which joins the long list of alternatives to plastic. Two models are proposed, the first based on the dehydrated wild grass Lepironia Articulata, the second composed of the fresh plant, Ống hút cỏ tươi,—both widespread in Southeast Asia.
Its naturally hollow stem requires little manual work and can be stored for up to two weeks at room temperature for the fresh model, six months for dry straws.
A multitasking straw
The great success met in Vietnam is not surprising, as the material seems specially designed to be turned into straw. According to its creator, it is even possible to eat it after use and would help to brush your teeth. Edible, therefore, in addition to being produced locally, compostable and obviously free of any chemical product. Sold in packs of 100, the straws are currently only available in Vietnam.
