Fertility apps: the \u2018next wave\u2019 in solving global family planning crisis<\/h2>\n

Every year, lack of\u00a0access to contraception causes about 85 million unplanned\u00a0pregnancies and a host of negative associated health outcomes. One expert said this global health crisis can be mitigated with apps that allow\u00a0women to understand and track their fertility.<\/p>\n

The challenge to provide universal contraceptive access is an old problem, but there are new challenges. A few\u00a0were created by the Trump administration, which reinstated \u2013 and expanded \u2013 the\u00a0Global Gag Rule, freezing government funding\u00a0to many foreign NGOs\u00a0providing\u00a0family planning, maternal and child health, nutrition and other critical health services.<\/p>\n

Global family planning expert Leslie Heyer is one of many advocates who warns that the funding cuts will have\u00a0devastating consequences for women and their families,\u00a0especially\u00a0in the developing world.<\/p>\n

Heyer is the founder of\u00a0Cycle Technologies,\u00a0a provider of family-planning tools to women worldwide. Some of Cycle\u2019s methods \u2013 like\u00a0CycleBeads and\u00a0Dot \u2013 provide forms\u00a0of contraception requiring nothing more than a mobile phone. Heyer said these\u00a0digital options can be\u00a0accessible, cost-effective alternatives to traditional contraceptive methods, which are often reliant on fragile supply systems and subjected to restrictions under policymakers.<\/p>\n

She explained that fertility awareness apps\u00a0are now more accurate than ever, thanks to\u00a0sophisticated algorithms that deliver information that women can use to understand when they are fertile and to plan their\u00a0pregnancies when they are ready. Such methods have been\u00a0approved\u00a0as\u00a0modern contraceptive methods\u00a0by the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n

Cycle Technologies officials said their products\u00a0have been used by more than 6 million women in more than 60 countries.<\/p>\n
