Meet 5 entrepreneurs fighting food waste<\/h2>\n

In our modern world, waste food is unacceptable and some entrepreneurs are doing their part to bring about sustainable hunger, sustainable agriculture practices, and sustainable consumption and production to fruition.<\/p>\n

These five individuals have a serious impact on food waste chain from farming and agriculture to supermarkets retail, all the way down to the individual consumer.<\/p>\n

Feedback<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Tristram Stuart<\/a><\/em><\/span> has founded Feedback to fight the policies, and cosmetics standard which supermarkets are confronted and obscure government regulations. He devotes<\/span> his career to the question and explains<\/span> this in his book “Waste.<\/span>“<\/span> Feedback<\/span>‘s first awareness event took place in London’s Trafalgar Square in December 2009 and fed 5,000 people \u2014<\/span> and the resulting media coverage was a catalyst for the UK government to change<\/span> some of its policies about food waste.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

ColdHubs<\/a><\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Niger<\/span>, post-harvest losses of fresh<\/span> fruits and vegetables affect 470 million farmers and retailers in other developing nations.<\/span> The bottom line:<\/span> Small<\/span> farmers may lose as much as 25% of their annual income due to spoilage.<\/span> Nnaemeka Ikegwuonuu<\/span><\/em><\/a>, a Nigerian agriculturist created<\/span> a startup which is a social venture that produces<\/span> modular, walk-in cold rooms that extend the shelf life of perishable foods \u2014<\/span> and not just by hours or days, but by weeks.<\/span> The rooms are fueled by solar panels and high-capacity batteries, making<\/span> them an eco-conscious solution for portable refrigeration<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

OLIO<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Tessa Cook<\/em><\/a> wanted to do something to cut down the \u00a313 billion worth of food that the UK collectively throws out each year.<\/span> For that, she created a free app to connect neighbors with local shops and caf\u00e9s so that surplus food can be repurposed.<\/span> The App is simple to use:<\/span> Just snap a photo of items you wish to discard, and neighbors receive alerts and can request whatever piques their interest.<\/span> Pickup is arranged via the private messages.<\/p>\n

Industrial\u00a0<\/a><\/span>Organic <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

This Startup tackling food<\/span> recycling in urban areas finds<\/span> ways to put<\/span> the water, energy, and nutrients of food<\/span> waste to work.<\/span> Amanda Weeks<\/em><\/a> is an entrepreneur tackling the problem from another angle:<\/span> Using waste as a resource.<\/span> Through a multi-step recovery process (technically termed “anaerobic fermentation”)<\/span>,<\/span> the company plans to up-cycle waste into bio-based products including household cleaners, fragrances, and organic fertilizer.<\/span> It goes beyond composting;<\/span> the process generates no methane and produces fewer emissions and odors than other solutions.<\/span> “We reclaim the resources spent on food that is wasted and reuse them to create a more sustainable system for future generations.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Entocycle<\/a><\/span> <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Keiran<\/span> Olivares<\/span> Whitaker<\/em><\/a>‘s company, Entocycle<\/span>, takes<\/span> another creative approach to food waste recycling \u2014 harnessing<\/span> the power of nature.<\/span> Entocycle<\/span> transforms food waste into sustainable, protein-based feed for the agriculture industry \u2014<\/span> all using the power of insects.<\/span> The company is developing the first fully automated “smart factory” that produces insect protein meal.<\/span> The system employs vertical farming, so it’s able to produce<\/span> large<\/span> volumes of product in very small<\/span> spaces.<\/span> The whole<\/span> up-cycling process takes less than a week.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
