1Mexico stops glyphosate and transgenic corn
Mexico becomes the first country in Latin America to stop the use of glyphosate and transgenic corn by 2024
Environment and health
According to the socialist government led by Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, the aim of this decree is double. First, they want to encourage the sovereignty of the Mexican people. Secondly, the objective is to protect the indigenous corn of the country. Furthermore, it is the center of origin, domestication, and diversification of 59 types of corn and other cultures.
Indeed, this cereal constitutes one of the main ingredients in their national alimentation. Mexicans consume it daily, especially in tortillas. The historic birthplace of this cereal, the country is still one of the biggest corn importers. According to the Mexican media Jornada, it imports 18 million tonnes in 2020, a record number.
Dangerous products for mankind
To the Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), glyphosate is classified as a “possible cancerogenic” since 2015. This product has been much written about for many years because of its detrimental effects on health.
Commercialized by the American giant Monsanto, the product is facing a lot of controversies, especially with Round-Up, an herbicide made with glyphosate. This one is making people sick all around the world. The company is disbursing 10 billion dollars to indemnify more than 100 000 pending disputes in the USA alone.
In an announcement, Greenpeace charity is pleased because of the progressive interdiction of glyphosate by 2024. They explain it is an important step to move toward ecological production and preserving biodiversity.
According to Greenpeace again, GMOs like transgenic corn and glyphosate are dangerous to the diversity of farm varieties conserved in the fields and are fundamental for alimentary production. The government invites the industry to think about lasting solutions more respectfully and environmentally. Next challenge to solve worldwide.
