The hidden side of textiles!

The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. Cotton cultivation does indeed appear to be a devastating crop for our ecosystem, for farmers, but also for consumers. In addition, according to the WHO, 30 to 50% of the world’s pesticides are dumped into cotton fields. 

The Water Footprint Network, which is in charge of accounting for the water needs of everyday products, says that it takes between 6,000 and 27,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of cotton fibre. In other words, the manufacture of a T-shirt requires about 2,500 litres of water compared to 8,000 litres for jeans. Nevertheless, the water footprint will depend on the country of manufacture. 

Regardless of this ecological disaster generated by this industry, the working conditions for the workers do not seem much better. Indeed, taking advantage of the attractiveness of decentralization, the large groups that exploit this workforce from the “South” to the detriment of their mental and physical health. Their working hours are endless and in many cases, the workshops are in a state of terrible disrepair. The collapse of the Rana Plaza in April 2013 testifies to this stark reality…

Velcorex-Matières Française would like to put an end to all this.

No more cotton? 

The Alsatian firm, which offers a wide range of fabrics made in France since 1828, now wants to innovate by turning to fabrics designed with nettle as a base. Pierre Schmitt, President of the Velcorex group, took the opportunity of the Première Vision trade show to present the brand’s first 100% nettle pants. Made from stems and not nettle leaves.

Once the manufacturing process is finished, the nettle fibre fabric is as strong as cotton fabric. As a bonus to its firmness, nettle is a plant that needs very little water to grow. 

The brand, which has decided to invest in the future of the environment, plans to market its first collections next year. This production of eco-friendly jackets and trousers will offer a more sustainable alternative for all consumers who want to preserve the planet.
