1 billion doses of the vaccine sent to poor countries
The World Health Organization (WHO) states a UN-backed program to send COVID-19 vaccines to poor countries has delivered its billionth dose on a shipment to Rwanda.

Up to January 2022, the COVAX program has made deliveries to over 140 countries and is being run in cooperation with Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance. This company has worked in the past to vaccinate children from poor countries and states, “By improving access to new and underused vaccines for millions of the most vulnerable children, the Vaccine Alliance is transforming the lives of individuals, helping to boost the economies of lower-income countries and making the world safer for everyone.”
The COVAX Program is dealing with equity. It plans to make sure people from all parts of the globe get this vaccine regardless of wealth or status. The website states, “For lower-income funded nations, who would otherwise be unable to afford these vaccines… COVAX is quite literally a lifeline and the only viable way in which their citizens will get access to COVID-19 vaccines.”
What happens without it?
Without the COVAX Program countries are left to fend for themselves. In these cases, the virus is left behind and able to affect and infect “unabated.”
The issue not only lies in vaccine distribution, it also lies in continued research and development of different vaccines and strains of the virus. This milestone may be just that, but it also serves as a reminder of the work to be done to contain this virus.
