A second life for hotel soaps
In 2017, Pauline Grumel set up an ambitious project: to create an association that gives a second life to hotel soaps. A year later, Unisoap had already collected and recycled around 800 kg of soap. Since then, more than 130 hotels have become partners of this association.
A Mess of Colossal Magnitude
There are around 949 million soaps thrown away every year in the world, including no less than 51 million by hotels in France. Even if the soap is biodegradable by its composition, it is always a huge loss not to recycle it.
Add to this, and it is even more distressing, there are more than 2.2 million children who die each year due to lack of hygiene in disadvantaged countries and 3 million do not have access to products of basic hygiene in France
A Triple Vision
Through this project, Pauline Grumel wishes to act on three levels. First, on an ecological level, hotel soaps are recycled instead of thrown away. Then, at the social level, the association mainly recruits young disabled people aged between 18 and 25 whose mission is to clean the soaps used before the recycling stage. Finally, it is above all for a humanitarian purpose that Pauline Grumel embarked on this adventure: these recycled soaps would provide access to hygiene for the most disadvantaged populations in France but also abroad since she plans to distribute those soaps all over the world.
The End Product
This initiative attracts many hotels that link up with Unisoap to donate the soaps used. They are stored and then brought by Unisoap to a recycling center in Lyon. Once the whole process is completed, the new soaps are distributed to schools, hospitals, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), or even associations helping the poorest. In these establishments, hygiene is not very often put in the foreground so, for Pauline, it was essential to have easy access to it thanks to these recycled soaps.
