While analyzing hundreds of soil samples, researchers from Rockefeller University discovered a new family of antibiotics. These compounds could help tremendously in the fight against antibiotic resistance.
Researchers from Rockefeller University have discovered, while doing analysis on more than 1,000 soil samples from across the United compounds called malacidins. It is a newly discovered family of dirt-dwelling antibiotics that could be used as a weapon against resistant “superbugs”.
Some tests have been run on rats, scientists infected them with a very resistant bacterium. The bacteria, after resisting many antibiotics couldn’t resist to the new compound scientists had just discovered.
Every year, an estimation of 700,000 people die due to drug-resistant superbugs, so it is a new kind of weapon that researchers are going to invest so that number doesn’t increase in the coming years.
